Independent journalism is very important, indicating good governance, a functional democracy and shows that freedom of speech is practiced. Cambodia is still struggling to achieve free speech. The technological developments of the past several decades have introduced many new ways of reaching out to the public. Most people in Cambodia now have access to radio, television or even Internet to communicate with other Cambodians about current issues. Though the technology is available, education is still lacking.
Volunteers' Responsibilities:
Volunteers will assist local NGO staff with radio and television outreach programs, writing on reports and proposals, newsletters or social media outreach using such mediums such as Facebook and YouTube. This helps NGOs develop better relations with the public both locally and internationally. There is a strong need for website development, as websites often assist organizations in obtaining crucial foreign assistance. They will use their English skills to correct reports of the local staff and participate in meetings and workshops. Volunteers may even get the chance to conduct interviews or assist staff in doing so.
Requirements:
- The volunteer should have a certain background or be studying in a certain field.
- Has at least an intermediate level of English.
- Having obtained training in some areas or has some work experience in the related field is also helpful.
- The volunteer should be able to adapt quickly to social and cultural change and interest in the country and culture.
- The flexibility to participate in many different tasks depending on the ever-changing needs of the organization.
Project Location
Phnom Penh:
Phnom Penh is also a good base for trips through the country as it is very central. Bus tickets to nearby locations are readily available for purchase at your guesthouse, departing to many different locations in Cambodia and neighboring countries at many times throughout the day. These tickets are generally very inexpensive and can range between $8-$12. Common destinations include Angkor Wat and Siem Reap (5-6 hours), the beaches of Sihanoukville (four hours), Kampot (3 hours), and Battambang (5-6 hours).
Start Dates: Every first and third Monday of the month.
Minimum Stay: 6 weeks
Duration: 6-24 weeks
